Blogger Book Fair Day 4: Goodbye Nothing by Beck Sherman

Day 4 of the Blogger Book Fair I’m happy to bring you an excerpt from Goodbye Nothing by Beck Sherman. Be sure and follow her link over to her blog to check out the reveal of her cover!

Goodbye Nothing Pre-Release Excerpt:

The fortune teller directed them to two folding chairs by a small table with nothing

on top of it. When they all were seated, Ren got a closer look at the woman. Her face

was smooth, but her eyes were old, and when she finally spoke her voice was old too.

He expected her to have an Eastern European accent but out came the thickest Boston

accent he had ever heard. She must be from the gypsy clan out of Dorchester, Ren thought

“My name is Wanderlight,” the fortune teller said.

“Laser Beam,” Ren said, extending his hand. “Nice to meet you.”

“Ren,” Joey said.

Wanderlight did not take his hand and he took it away.

“It’s forty dollars for a palm reading. Will that be cash, check, or charge?”

“Can we pay in crystals?”

“Cash, then. And it’s only the lady tonight. I already know my future and it’s

stunning. Amazing, really.”

Joey squeezed Ren’s hand. He didn’t usually pick on the elderly, but he believed

anyone who took money for this type of thing was a con artist. Joey started for her purse.

Ren stopped her and pulled out his wallet. He took two twenties from it and gave them to

Wanderlight. As went most transactions for devious deeds, the money was already tucked

neatly away before Ren noticed his hand empty.

“You are blind,” Wanderlight began. Ren shifted noisily in his seat. Joey patted his

leg. “Give me your right palm.”

Joey gave her hand to the woman.

“I see big things in your future. You are going away soon?”

“Yes,” Joey answered.

“Ah, that’s good. You’re young.”

Ren rolled his eyes. He wasn’t sure how much he could take.

“You study, yes? Art?”

“Photography.” The fortune teller gave Joey a look at that, like the con artist had the

thought she was the one being conned.

“You have not been blind forever, only since two years.”

“Oh my God, yes.”

Ren leaned into her, “She’s just telling you things you already know.”

Joey whispered back, “She’s proving herself…then comes the interesting stuff.”

Wanderlight was staring at them. “May I continue?”

They both nodded.

“You steal.”

“I do what?” Joey asked.

“You are a thief.”

Ren laughed. The woman couldn’t have pegged Joey more wrong. His best friend

wouldn’t even take a penny from the “Take a penny, leave a penny” tray at convenient

“You steal,” Wanderlight repeated, with more determination this time.

“No ─ I’ve never stolen anything. I’m not sure I could…now…but even when I was

sighted…oh wait. I did take some candy once without paying when I was six or seven. Is

that what you mean?”

“From Conrad’s Confectionary?” Ren asked.

“Yes. Two Swedish fish.”

“I can’t believe it took Wanderstars here for this to come out. What other dirty secrets

are you hiding?” Joey giggled.

“I am not talking about candy fish,” Wanderlight said, raising her voice. “What you

have stolen you do not know about. It is not an object that can be seen or touched or

eaten.” She said the last word as if she had indeed eaten it and it was very, very sour.

“But it has had great consequence, this taking, for you and the other.” Ren and Joey were

quiet. Fairgoers passed by outside. A balloon popped somewhere faraway. The fortune

teller moved her face, so it was almost touching Joey’s hand. Her eyebrows rose.

“What else?” Joey asked.

“You will get a B-plus in French Literature.” Wanderlight released Joey’s hand and

stood. “We’re done.”

“What?” Ren asked.

“I must go. This is not good energy. I like good energy.” Flame tips followed the

woman as she shuffled out of the tent.

“Um, bye,” Ren said.

Excerpt from A Brand New Ending:

“I don’t want to go anywhere, Braeden. Wherever you are is where I want to be.”

I think my heart does a back flip. “You have no idea how happy that makes me, hearing you say that.”

She gives me a sly smile, her fingers playing in and around mine.

“Can’t describe how amazing this feels,” she speaks. “I’ve never had anyone care for me like you do.”

“That’s a shame,” I respond quickly. “You deserve so much more than that.”

“Do I?”

I lean over her so that our faces are close but I make sure to do it gently, afraid that she might retreat from my touch.

“Yes,” I say softly as our eyes are locked on each other.

We hold our position and I can tell she is nervous, but I want her to make the first move. I made the mistake of pushing it on her the first time and I won’t be doing that again. I can feel the heat of her breath on my face, its oddly intoxicating. But I hold still. I start to count the number of my heartbeats when I suddenly feel force against my lips. I hold back the smile, my hand coming up to cup her cheek. I start to move my lips against her, the waves of ecstasy flowing through my body. After a second, her lips start to move in unison with mine. I’ve kissed lots of women, but it’s never felt quite like this. I don’t know how long it lasts, but I refrain from sticking my tongue in her mouth, fearing that may be too much. I then swear I feel her moan in my mouth, and it’s the most incredible fucking turn on I have ever heard in my life. She must have realized it too considering she pulled her lips off mine, her hands coming up to her mouth.

Thank you very much for hosting me today!

One of the greatest things I enjoy about being an author is engaging with readers. It was a little strange at first, shortly after my first novel was published, getting used to the idea that people were interested in asking questions and discussing characters and issues I created. With the publication of Muckross Folly, though, I’ve grown used to it. Invariably, one of the most frequent questions I get when speaking with readers is, “How do you write a female heroine?”

I was taken aback the first time I heard the question. I mean, I get the idea that I’m a man, and men may not always understand women, but as an author, I understand characters. And while my wife may argue I view Evelyn Morgan as more than a character, at her core, that’s what she is. That’s where I started. It was the transformation and development of this character into a woman which sometimes surprises even myself. That’s a rather long-winded expansion on my standard answer, which goes something like, “It’s a challenge.” Which it is. But I’m not sure it’s anything particularly special. Of course, I have several fantastic female editors, who I can’t thank enough. Particularly my wife. On several occasions, she’s read initial drafts of passages, shaken her head, and said, “There’s no woman in the world who would say that.” Or do that. Or think that. So I suppose a lot of my success in crafting Evelyn goes back to the ongoing education I receive from all of my female friends, my editors, and my wife.

I suppose I should start preparing myself for the inevitable “How do you write a female villain?” (Because there’s a nasty one in Muckross Folly.) But I haven’t gotten that question yet, and the novel was published over sixty days ago. I’m not sure what that says about how women are perceived.

I sincerely hope you enjoy Muckross Folly, and please read the first novel in the series Keyser Run. I would also love to hear from you at, on Goodreads, or on my site

J.L. Austgen grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Brebeuf Jesuit High School where his love for writing fiction took root. After graduating, he moved to Colorado to attend college and study creative writing. An information technology engineer, Mr. Austgen created Evelyn Morgan out of a need for a creative outlet.

Q. At what point in your life did you realize that being an author was no longer going to be just a

dream but a career you were going to turn into reality?

A. I once had someone say to me that anyone could be an author, but it takes a lot of sweat and

perseverance to be a writer. Calling writing a “dream” minimizes the amount of effort needed as

it’s truly hard work, and if you don’t throw yourself into it whole-heartedly, you’d never get

anywhere. All writers, at least the ones that take themselves seriously, know that, and the truth is

it’s an ongoing process only as good as your last book.

Q. How did you choose the genre you write in?

A. I write in several genres in addition to Romance, but the reason I write Romance is because I

love it. How could you not love something that makes you feel so good?

Q. How did you choose the title for Wanted: Wife?

A. That honor belongs to my lovely editor, Tessa Woodward, of HarperCollins/Avon.

Q. How did you get involved with your current publisher?

A. I met Tessa Woodward at a Liberty States Fiction Writers conference, at an editor/agent pitch

session. I CANNOT stress the importance of Writers Conferences enough to any writer with a

FINISHED manuscript who wants to get published. They WORK.

Q. How does your writing process look? Consistent with regular amounts of word counts

daily/weekly… or more sporadic with a gush of words all at once and then a dry bed for a while?

A. Every writer has a different method and there really is no one correct way. For me, when I start a

book, I work on it every day until it’s finished, with no fixed word or page counts. For me, this

works as the deeper I get into the story, the easier and more intensely it flows, and it’s a process

that’s pretty hard to stop.

Q. Is there a question you’d love someone to ask you, but they haven’t? If so, what is it, and how

would you answer it?

A. I would just love someone to ask me “How can you write so glowingly about New Jersey when

it’s really a stinking cesspool of toxic waste and corruption?” And I would say, “You keep

thinking that sweetheart, as it’s a myth perpetuated by its inhabitants to keep everyone else

Jet Banner

Today Jay Crownover makes a stop by my blog to bring us Jet. There’s also a giveaway! She’s also shared some things about a few of her characters with us. I hope you enjoy!

With his tight leather pants and a sharp edge that makes him dangerous, Jet Keller is every girl’s rock and roll fantasy. But Ayden Cross is done walking on the wild side with bad boys. She doesn’t want to give in to the heat she sees in Jet’s dark, haunted eyes. She’s afraid of getting burned from the sparks of their spontaneous combustion, even as his touch sets her on fire.

Jet can’t resist the Southern Belle with mile-long legs in cowboy boots who defies his every expectation. Yet the closer he feels to Ayden, the less he seems to know her. While he’s tempted to get under her skin and undo her in every way, he knows firsthand what happens to two people with very different ideas about relationships.

Will the blaze burn into an enduring love. . . or will it consume their dreams and turn them to ashes?
